What is a tincture?

A tincture, also known as an extract, is a liquid plant extract containing concentrated active herbal compounds. Tinctures are typically made by infusing different plant parts such as roots, leaves, bark and berries in varying water to alcohol ratios. They then infuse for several weeks, are strained, and then the liquid is separated and can be used to treat several ailments and illnesses. 

Alcohol is the preferred solvent and here's why: 

•  Alcohol extracts the herbal compounds and other active ingredients that aren’t soluble in water such as resins, essential oils and certain alkaloids. 

• Alcohol based tinctures are exceptionally fast acting because they enter the bloodstream very quickly and deliver the plant’s herbal compounds directly into cells.

•  All of our cells are made up of a continuous fat barrier called a phospholipid bilayer which can be easily penetrated by the alcohol-based herbal tincture thus healing the body at an extremely deep cellular level. 

• Alcohol is often used as a preservative and gives herbal extracts a long lasting shelf life (5+ years)
